Official Show charities
As is now the tradition, the West Wilts Show 2007 will be supporting local charities – this year, there will be three – Alzheimer’s support, West Wiltshire Link Schemes and West Wilts Wide Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
Alzheimer’s Support
Founded in response to a locally identified need for support for dementia sufferers and their carers. It provides flexible services across West Wiltshire and Kennet, with 150 families being helped at any time.
Sufferers, carers, professionals and others can access information about dementia, which also raises awareness about the illness and promotes a better understanding of it. Support includes home care for sufferers, three day clubs providing care seven days a week, and a counselling service for carers, who are usually family members. The service is focused on maintaining dignity and independence, thereby delaying admission to full time residential care.

West Wiltshire’s Link Schemes
West Wiltshire’s Link Schemes provide a good neighbour volunteer service for many residents of local communities. Help is offered with transport – maybe to a doctor’s appointment, assistance with shopping, collecting prescriptions and other small tasks. Requests are made to a Link Co-ordinator, who many clients regard as a friendly voice at the end of the phone to help them.
In 2005 volunteers carried out nearly 14,000 tasks – each one making a difference to someone’s life. For example, Melksham volunteers provided transport to hospital appointments on 665 occasions. Without the help of a Link volunteer, many clients would be unable to do simple things that most of us take for granted.

West Wiltshire Citizens’ Advice Bureau (WWCAB)
Formed in January 2002, with a number of clients seeking advice growing year on year. It provides an essential free service for people who are struggling with a wide variety of issues principally related to debt, benefits and housing.
The Bureau is working through a major change process to improve its advice and information services. It needs more volunteers and resources to deliver the standard of service it would like, to all its clients in a timely and efficient way.
The charities will each have a fundraising day during the Show when they can roam around the Show ground to raise much needed funds. So please give generously.
